Various gases of the air can be separated by the process of fractional distillation.
Fractional distillation is a separation method based on the difference in boiling points of different components of a liquid.
In case of air, to separate the various components of air it is first filtered and dust particles and other wastes are removed. Then it is cooled to very low temperatures and high pressure to convert it into liquid air. Then it is allowed to pass through a fractionating column, which is warmer at the base than at the top. As the liquid goes down it gets warmer and warmer and eventually as each component of air reaches it's boiling point it started to separate through the outlet and is collected separately. For eg nitrogen has a boiling point of -196°C. So as the liquid air reaches a temp. of -196, nitrogen starts to separate. Similarly oxygen separates at -183°C.
