Coal is formed from the remains of trees, ferns, mosses, and other vegetation. Approximately 300 million years ago, these remains were trapped on the bottom of swamps. Layers after layers accumulated over a long period of time creating a dense material called peat. Under high temperatures and pressure the peat was transformed into coal.
