At first, the mixture is added to methylene chloride in which both the compounds are soluble.
Since the acid reacts with an aqueous base to form a highly polar salt so the mixture is next added to sodium hydroxide solution.
Naphthalene doesn't dissolve in the base solution and remains dissolved in the methylene chloride which when evaporated yields naphthalene crystals.
On the other hand, to the other part hydrochloric acid is added to make it acidic and once again benzoic acid crystals are obtained which can be separated.
