When the magnesium metal burns it reacts with oxygen found in the air toform Magnesium Oxide. ... After itburns, it forms a white powder of themagnesium oxide. Magnesium gives up two electrons to oxygen atoms toform this powdery product. This is an exothermic reaction.

An exothermic reaction is a term that describes a chemical reaction in which there is a net release of energy (heat).

2Mg(s)+O2(g)→2MgO(s)+energy(1)(1)2Mg(s)+O2(g)→2MgO(s)+energy

Magnesium is also capable of reducing water to the highly-flammable hydrogen gas, which will be ignited by the excess heat given by the reduction reaction.

Mg(s)+2H2O→Mg(OH)2(s)+H2(g)(2)(2)Mg(s)+2H2O→Mg(OH)2(s)+H2(g)

Magnesium also reacts with carbon dioxide to form magnesium oxide and carbon:

Mg(s)+CO2→2MgO(s)+C(s)(3)

Sulphur dioxide is more acidic in nature

1. 2Mg + O2 - 2MgO
2. S + O2 - SO2
The oxides of non metals are acidic in nature.
Here the Magnesium is a metal while Sulphur is a non metal hence the SO2 formed is acid oxide of non metal.
