This reaction is a good indicator of the oxidising nature of concentrated nitric acid.
the general reaction between a non metal and concentrated nitric acid is as follows
non−metal+HNO3⟶acidofthenon−metal+H2O+NO2non−metal+HNO3⟶acidofthenon−metal+H2O+NO2
Unlike in the general reaction an acid (H2CO3) is not produces as carbonic acid is not stable under normal conditions .
