Esters are the ‘product’ formed when ‘organic acid reacts with alcohol’ in the presence of ‘acid catalyst’ and the reaction is esterification.

Explanation:

  • The process in which an organic acid reacting with alcohol in the ‘presence of catalyst’ is said to be esterification. The product formed is known as esters.
  • These ‘esters’ are derived from the carboxylic acids. It has –COOH groups. The ester present in the ‘hydrogen’ is replaced by the group of hydrocarbon group.
  • Most commonly known ester is ethyl ethanoate. Here the primary catalyst usually used is sulphuric acid. In some other gases, ‘dry hydrogen chloride’ can be used as catalyst.
