When an acid reacts with metal carbonates, the products former are salt, water, and carbon dioxide gas.
2HCl + Na2CO3 -> 2NaCl + H2O + CO2.
To test the gas that is carbon dioxide, pass the gas through a test tube containing lime water. It will turn milky. You may also introduce a glowing splinter into the apparatus having the gas. The splinter gets extinguished.
