This is due to 4 valence electrons
These chains are formed in different ways in different compounds
That is why carbon in life is so important and a whole branch of chemistry is dedicated to it.
The allotropes of carbon, too occurs in long chains. Allotrope with smallest no. of carbon atoms is buckminsterfullerene (with 60 atoms!)
