Antibody, often called immunoglobulin, is a protective protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of an antigen, or foreign substance. Antibodies attach to antigens and rid the body of them. Antigens are substances that the body identifies as disease-causing organisms or dangerous compounds such as insect venom.

The Functions of Antibodies

  • Because molecules on the antigen's surface differ from those found in the body, the immune system may recognise an alien substance as foreign when it enters the body.
  • Antibodies are produced by B lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cell (or B cells).
