Racism in Africa is multi-faceted and dates back several centuries. It is a phenomenon that has been strengthened by European colonialism, under which boundaries were drawn that did not take into consideration the different peoples dwelling within the newly formed provinces. The boundaries were little changed when former European colonies gained independence. As a consequence, some African nations have been plagued with inner conflicts, racist attitudes and tribal warfare.

Apartheid was the name of a system of racial discrimination unique to south africa, which was imposed by the white europeans on the blacks. The following three efforts were made by the people of south africa to struggle against the apartheid system

1.From 1950 onwards the blacks, coloured and indians fought against the aparyheid system. They launched protest marches and strikes.

2.The african national congress led the struggle against this policy of segregation. Many workers unions and the communist party joined this movememt.

3. Even many sensitives whites joined the ANC and played a leading role in this movement.
