Reactions that give out energy are called exothermic reactions. The temperature of the surroundings gets higher as the reaction takes place. (The surroundings will be the air, water (if the reaction takes place in solution), any container (such as a beaker or test tube) – and your fingers if you touch the container!)

Remember EX-othermic for EXIT and energy goes out!

On the other hand, some reactions take in energy from their surroundings. We call this type of reaction an endothermic reaction. In  

endothermic reactions the temperature of the surroundings decreases. If the reaction takes place in a test tube, it feels cold when you touch it (the reacting mixture will take in energy from your fingers).
