A brown gas called nitrogen dioxide is evolved when lead nitrate crystals are is heated in a test tube according to the following chemical reaction

2 Pb(NO3)2 → 2 PbO + 4 NO2 + O2

In this reaction, oxidation and decomposition both occurs simultaneously.

Lead nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Pb(NO3)2.

It commonly occurs as a colorless crystal or white powder and, unlike most other lead(II) salts, is soluble in water.
