In this reaction Al (Aluminium is the reducing agent).

Aluminium is more reactive than Mn because Al is displacing Mn from it's compound.

More about reduction and oxidation:-

  • Oxidation:- The process in which a substance gains oxygen or loses hydrogen is known as Oxidation.
  • Oxidizing agent:- Oxidizing agent is a substance which gives oxygen or removes hydrogen and cause the oxidation of other substances.

  • Reduction:- The process in which a substance reduces oxygen or gains hydrogen is known as reduction.
  • Reducing agent:- A reducing agent is a substance which gives hydrogen or removes oxygen and causes reduction of other substances.

  1. Consider the reaction:- CuO + H2 -----> Cu + H2O
  • In this reaction, hydrogen removes oxygen from copper oxide. Thus CuO is reduced and hydrogen behaves as reducing agent.
  • In the same reaction Copper oxide gives oxygen to hydrogen and hydrogen is oxidized to water by CuO. Therefore CuO is acting as oxidizing agent.

'Al' is reducing agent.

'AT' is more reactive than Mn v ‘Al’ displaces Mn from its oxide.
