A respiratory pigment is a molecule, such as haemoglobin in humans and other vertebrates, that increases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. The four most common invertebrate respiratory pigments are haemoglobin, hemocyanin, hemerythrin and chlorocruorin.
