Causes for the Revolt
- Janmis, the landlords of Kerala who owned majority of estates and properties.
- They restricted the people from collecting Mechipullu from their estates.
- Mechilpullu is a type of grass used in roofing of huts and as firewoods.
- As a protest against this restriction of collecting Mechipullu, the people cultivated Mechipullu from Kannan Nair's field with the protesting slogans uttered by Kunhakkamma.
- The revolt was suppressed by special police force, which ruined the households of the protestants.
- Then, all the women strikers march towards Local government office under the lead of Kandakai Kunhakkamma. This march is called as "Kalaketu Jadha".
