The ruler of Russia in 1914 was Nicholas ||

  • Nicholas II or Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov was the last Emperor of the Russian empire. He ruled Russia from 1 November 1894 until his surrender on 15 March 1917.
  • While in power, Nicholas supported various economic and political reforms. He was an advocate of modernization based on foreign loans. However, he was quite resistant in giving the new parliament (the Duma) major roles.
  • Ultimately, progress was undermined due to Nicholas' commitment to autocratic rule, strong aristocratic opposition and defeats encountered by the Russian army in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I.
  • By March 1917, public support for Nicholas had collapsed and he was forced to abdicate the throne. This ended the Romanov dynasty's 304-year long rule of Russia (1613–1917).
