Neil Bartlett was the scientist who prepare the first noble gas compound, xenon hexafluoroplatinate, was discovered on this day in 1962. Noble gases were thought to be completely inert, but English chemist Neil Bartlett observed that mixing platinum hexafluoride with xenon formed the yellow solid xenon hexafluoroplatinate.
