The first devices I ever worked with were called VDT ( Video data terminals.) These were simply input/output devices hooked to a computer over a modem of some sort.
When home computers came out, we hooked regular TVs to them. In some cases, like with Radio Shack Tandy computers, you used their own displays with them. In either case, these were called CRTs, or monitors in my experience. CRT is short for Cathode Ray Tube ( that being the gizmo which projected an electron beam which drew the picture on the screen.)
Then flat panel displays came out, based on LCD technology.
