The temple is dedicated to Vishnu in the form of Kesava. To the south of the Kesava temple is the Kappe Chennigaraya templemeasuring 124 feet by 105 feet. It has two sanctums inside, one dedicated to Venugopala and the other to Chennigaraya (local popular name of Chennakeshava, Vishnu).

Sculptors of Channakeshava temple:

Ruvari Malitamma, Dasoja, Chavana, Malliyanna, Nagoja, Chikkahampa and Malloja was the creator of the Belur Channakeshava temple.

Explanation:

Belur is the home of the Chennakesava Temple which is also called as Chennakeshava, one of the greatest examples of Hoysala architecture. The temple was constructed by Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana at the start of the twelfth century, when the city of Belur was the location for the Hoysala capital.

The Chennakesava Temple is designed with a soapstone and has a very detailed design constructed around a traditional Hoysala theme. The size of the temple varies from many other Hoysala temples and is considered one of the oldest of the dynasty.
