Answer:

1) Primary sex determination is the determination of the gonads. In mammals, primary sex determination is strictly chromosomal and is not usually influenced by the environment.

2) Males are the homogametic sex (ZZ), while females are the heterogametic sex (ZW). The Z chromosome is larger and has more genes, like the X chromosome in the XY system.

  1. Plrimary sex determination is the determination of the gonads. In mammals, primary sex determination is strictly chromosomal and is not usually influenced by the environment. In most cases, the female is XX and the male is XY. Every individual must have at least one X chromosome.
  2. In birds, the sex determination is by Z and W sex chromosomes. Female birds are heterogametic, that is they contain ZW type of chromosomes. Male birds are homogametic, they contain ZZ type of chromosomes. The W chromosome contains the female determining properties.
