SOLUTION

TO EVALUATE

Due to heavy storm an electric wire got bent as shown in the figure. It followed a mathematical shape. Answer the following questions below.

(i) Name the shape in which the wire is bent

a) Spiral b) ellipse c) linear d) Parabola

(ii) How many zeroes are there for the polynomial (shape of the wire)

a) 2 b) 3 c) 1 d) 0

(iii) The zeroes of the polynomial are

a) -1, 5 b) -1, 3 c) 3, 5 d) -4, 2

(iv) What will be the expression of the polynomial?

a) x² + 2x - 3 b) x² - 2x + 3

c) x² - 2x - 3 d) x² + 2x + 3

(v) What is the value of the polynomial if x = -1

a) 6 b) -18 c) 18 d) 0

EVALUATION

From the figure we see that the graph represents the equation of a parabola

(i) Name the shape in which the wire is bent

d) Parabola

From figure we also see that the graph cuts X axis at two points

Hence the number of zeroes of the polynomial = 2

(ii) The number of zeroes for the polynomial (shape of the wire)

a) 2

From figure we also see that the graph cuts X axis at two points and the points are - 1 & 3

(iii) The zeroes of the polynomial are

b) -1, 3

So the zeroes of the polynomial are -1, 3

Hence the required polynomial

 \sf{ {x}^{2}  -(Sum  \: of \:  the \: zeroes )x +  Product \:  of  \: the \:  zeroes }

 \sf{ =  {x}^{2}  - ( - 1 + 3)x + ( - 1 \times 3)}

 \sf{ =  {x}^{2}  - 2x   - 3}

(iv) The expression of the polynomial

c) x² - 2x - 3

Again

For x = - 1 we have

= (-1)² - 2.(-1) - 3

= 1 + 2 - 3

= 0

(v) The value of the polynomial if x = - 1

d) 0
