Oyster is the shell fish that is cultured to get natural pearls. Oyster is a type of marine mollusc that grows pearl within its mantle and thus known as pearl oyster. 

Actually, the pearl is secreted from the inner layer of the shell of the oyster. Thus, large numbers of pearls are now harvested to obtain pearls on commercial basis.

When a small piece of well polished shell of mussel is placed inside an oyster, the pearl is gradually formed within 
three to seven years
