The Sykes-Picot Agreement was a First-World-War-era pact that Britain and France forged, in secret, to split administrative control of the Middle East between themselves following “the Great War.” Russia also had knowledge of the deal and went along with it.

It was named after the British and French statesmen, Mark Sykes and Francois Georges-Picot respectively, who ironed out the terms of the deal. The accord was ratified on May 16, 1916.

Previously, the British had promised the Arabs that if they fought the Ottomans, the British would give them Ottoman lands and political autonomy
