Sir William Jones in January 1784 started a society in Calcutta (Now Kolkata) named as the Asiatic Studies.

He intimated the fellow Britishers about the same via circular.

On his invitation, a committee of 30 British residents met in the Grand Jury Room of the Supreme Court (in Calcutta's Fort William) on 15 January 1784.

It contains paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Joshua Reynolds.

It also has a library that has around 100,000 general, and its Sanskrit section has 27,000 books, manuscripts.
