Sodium Carbonate

Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is also known as washing soda. It can remove temporary and permanent hardness from water. Sodium carbonate is soluble but calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are insoluble. The water is softened because it no longer contains dissolved calcium ionsand magnesium ions.

Dear Student,

● Answer -

Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is used for softening hard water.

● Explaination -

  • Hard water contains salts of calcium and magnesium principally as bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates.
  • These ions displace sodium ion from soap molecules to form insoluble scum. Therefore soaps don't act in hard water.
  • Sodium carbonate is used for softening this hard water.

Thanks dear for asking. Hope this helps you...
