Ice(water) is a solid substance which is less denser than its liquid at its melting point. Since in the solid form(ice), it acquires more volume and thus has  less density as compared to water in liquid state in which it acquires less volume. Being less dense then liquid water, ice floats on water.

The solid which is less denser than its liquid at its melting point is Ice. That is the reason it floats on water.
