Tincture of iodine or iodine tincture is used as an antiseptic. It is referred to as weak iodine solution. Generally, 2-7% elemental iodine, along with potassium iodide or sodium iodide,which forms the solute, is dissolved in a mixture of ethanol and water, which forms the solvent, to obtain tincture of iodine. Tincture solutions are characterised by the presence of alcohol.
