Normally, solution of known pH are used to standardize the pH meter.  These solutions are usually " Standard Buffer solutions" .
The proper acidic and basic strength of pH should be used for preparation of "standard buffer solution"
The pH strength of the solution should be known . For the general purpose ,usually  Buffers of 4.00 and 10.00 pH are used . But it depends on the solution of which pH you are going to measure.

"Buffer Solutions" are used to calibrate pH meters because they resist changes in pH.
When you use a pH meter to measure pH, you want to make sure that if the meter says pH= 7.00 , the pH really is 7.00
Types Of Buffer Solutions:
Buffers can be classified into 3 categories based on the accuracy:
1. Technical Buffers:
Commercial buffers are also called technical buffers, are the solutions for practical use. typical accuracy for a technical buffer is ±0.05 pH units.
2. Standard Buffers:
Standard buffer solutions also known as a secondary reference buffers are used as a standard for precise measurements and in the manufacture of technical buffer solutions. Standard buffer solutions have accuracies between 0°C and 60°C.
3. Primary Reference Buffers:
Primary Reference Buffers are not available commercially and are used mainly in meteorological institutes. They have the lowest uncertainty in pH values i.e, ±0.003.
