Dear Student!!

The gravitational force is the source of the centripetal force that earth requires to revolve around the sun.

from the Universal Law of Gravitation

The law states that every object in the universe tends to attract other objects with a force that is directed along the line of centres. The magnitude of this force is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

Let the mass of earth and moon are M1 andM2 respectively be placed at a distance d from each other.

(a) Force of gravity between earth and moon is directly proportional to the product of their masses.

i.e.,(Product rule)

(b) Force of gravity between earth and moon is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.

i.e.,(Inverse-square rule)

Combining both equations, we obtain

Or,

Where, G is a constant called Universal Gravitational Constant or Newton’s constant.
