Bt-toxin gene.

Specific type of gene incorporated in cotton plant :

• strains of Bacillus thuringinesis produce proteins that kill insects such as tobacco budworm, armyworm, beetles, flies and mosquitoes.

• B. thuringinesis forms this type of special protein during a particular phase of their growth and these protein crystals contains a toxic insecticidal protein

• Bt- toxin protein exists as inactive prototoxins, but once the insect ingests the inactive toxin it is converted into an active form due to alkaline ph envorinment inside insect's gut.

• these activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and create pores causing cell swelling and lysis and eventually death of insect

• specific Bt- toxins are isolated from differts strains of B. thuringinesis and are being cloned from bacteria and are expressed in plants to provide resistance to insects without the need of chemical insecticides.
