Grease or any lubricating oil is applied between surfaces of contact, to reduce friction.

Grease is emulsified soap mixed with mineral or vegetable oil, that has high viscosity. When shear is applied, the viscosity drops to give an oil-lubrication effect. This change in viscosity is referred to as shear thinning.

Grease is used in parts which cannot be lubricated at regular intervals and where oil will not stay. Apart from its lubricating quality, it is also used as a water sealant.
