caclium oxide(quicklime) is used for white washing. calcium hydroxide(slaked lime) is formed when it is mixed with water.

CaO+H2O------->Ca(OH)2 , when Ca(OH)2 further reacts with CO2 it forms CaCO3, which give a shining surface to walls.
