Answer:

Oxidized substance - H₂S

Reduced substance- HNO₃

Oxidizing agent- HNO₃

Reducing agent - H₂S

Explanation:

  • Oxidation is the addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen or loss of electrons from a molecule.
  • Reduction is the addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen or gain of electrons by a molecule.
  • The substance undergoes the oxidation could be the reason of reduction of another substance in the reaction. Therefore, that substance is called a reducing agent.
  • The substance which is being reduced, is an oxidizing agent.

The given reaction is :

H₂S  +  HNO₃ \longrightarrow NO + S + H₂O

The oxidation of H₂S into S, because oxidation state of S changes from -2 to zero. So, H₂S is oxidized substance and acts as a reducing agent.

The HNO₃ is reduced into NO. Because oxidation state of N changes from +3 to +2.  Therefore   HNO₃ is reduced  and acts as a oxidizing agent.
