Explanation:

the third member of alkyne family is BUTYNE (C4H6).

Carbon forms covalent compounds as it is tetravalent that is it has 4 valence elections in its outermost shell.

(i) If it were to gain four electrons and to become carbon anion , the nucleus with 6 protons would have to hold on to 10 electrons, that is four extra electrons.

(ii) If it were to lose 4 electrons and become a carbon cation, it would require a lot of energy to lose 4 electrons leaving behind carbon atom with nucleus containing 6 protons holding on to just 2 electrons .

Therefore, to overcome this problem Carbon forms covalent bonds which is sharing of an electron pair between two or more atoms .

Hope it helps you . Ignore any spelling errors since i wrote it myself .
