The animals kingdom is divided into five branches, two of which are completely earless: Porifera (sponges) and Placozoa (tiny bloblike creatures the size of a pinhead).

The other three are a mixture of eared and earless: Ctenophora (comb jellies), Cnidaria, and Bilateria.

Cnidaria includes jellyfish, corals, and sea anemones. Many species of jellyfish and comb jellies have an organ of balance called a statocyst, related to human organ of balance in the inner ear. Some jellyfish also have the ability to hear, using their sense of hearing to avoid the sound of crashing waves, sometimes darting in an out of waves just before they break.

Bilateria are informally divided into two subgroups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Nearly all vertebrates have human-like ears that evolved out of jellyfish/comb jelly ears (except for a few minor details like the outer eardrum). Invertebrates include clams, worms, and insects. Many of them (especially insects) have antennal ears
