The sunlight( photons) are captured by the chlorophyll cells of the plants along with carbon dioxide to perform the process of photosynthesis( produce food for the plant).

The overall reaction of this process is:

6 CO2 + 6 H2O ---------> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
