The entire sexual process can be divided into three phases:
1. Pre-fertilization Events: These are events in sexual reproduction which occurs prior to the process of fertilization. The two main pre-fertilization events are gametogenesis and gamete transfer.
- Gametogenesis: Process of formation of gametes. Gametes are of two types – male and female and are always haploid.
- Gamete transfer: After the formation of male and female gametes, compatible gametes must be physical brought together to facilitate fusion.
2. Syngamy and Fertilization: The most important step in the process of sexual reproduction is the fusion of male and female gametes. Although the terms syngamy whereas fertilization are used synonymously, but the actual act of fusion of gametes is syngamy whereas fertilization includes all the events that ultimately lead to the syngamy.
3. Post-Fertilization Events: Events in sexual reproduction after the formation of zygote is called post-fertilization events.
- Zygote: The result of syngamy and fertilization is formation of diploid zygote which is vital link that ensures continuity of species between organisms of one generation to next generation.
- Embryogenesis: Development of embryo from the diploid zygote is known as embryogenesis. Embryonic development is complex process which involves cell division and cell differentiation.
