* Extend over- 10-50km of width
* Altitude varies between 900-1000m
* Composed of unconsolidated sediments that is brought down by the rivers from the main himalaya
* Covered with thick gravel and alluvium
* The longitudinal valley lying between lesser himalaya and Shiwalik are known as duns
