Throughout the stomach lining, mucous cells are found which secrete mucus. Mucus is also secreted by the gastric pits which are small pores. Mucus protects the stomach from the digestive secretions and neutralizes the pH of stomach acid.

The airway surface liquid (ASL), often referred to as mucus, is a thin layer of fluid covering the luminal surface of the airway. The major function of mucus is to protect the lung through mucociliary clearance against foreign particles and chemicals entering the lung.

The 4 major functions of the large intestine are recovery of water and electrolytes, formation and storage of faeces and fermentation of some of the indigestible food matter by bacteria. The ileocaecal valve controls the entry of material from the last part of the small intestine called the ileum.
