Polarization can also occurs when light is scattered. This happens when the light wave is traveling through a medium. As the light comes into contacts with the atoms of a material, it causes the electrons of those atoms to vibrate. The electrons that are vibrating then generates their own electromagnetic wave, this is then radiated outward in different directions. This generated electromagnetic wave forces neighboring electrons of atoms to vibrate at the same original frequency. This absorption and reemission of waves of light leads to the light to be scattered about the medium and the scattered light known to be partially polarized.
