Transgenic sheep have been produced carrying a gene construct comprising cDNA sequences encoding human alpha‐1‐antitrypsin (α1AT) inserted into the first exon of the ovine β‐lactoglobulin gene (BLG). Human α1,AT was detected in the milk of two out of three transgenic sheep and had a similar electrophoretic mobility to that of human plasma‐derived α1AT; however the levels of expression were low (18 μg/ml) and considered insufficient for commercial exploitation.
