Hello,
The sugar cane is Saccharum officinarum grown in South India had high sugar content and thicker stems but didn't grow in North India.
Saccharum barberi was grown in North India, this had poor sugar content and yield.
These two species was successfully crossed to get sugarcane varieties combining the desirable qualities of high yield, thick stems, high sugar and ability to grow in the sugarcane areas of North India.
Thank you
