• The 'Bay of Bengal branch' hits the coast of Myanmar and parts of Bangladesh at the south-east. However the Arakan Hills alongside the Myanmar coast deflect a vast portion of this branch to the subcontinent of India. Therefore, the wet winds from the Bengal Bay go through an unexpected rise here and lead to extreme rainfall. Mawsynram, situated on the peak of Khasi hills, gets the maximum average yearly rainfall in the world.
• There is comparatively less rainfall on the leeward slope of the Meghalaya Plateau. The Valley of Brahmaputra in the north also goes through a rain-shadow impact; the issue is alleviated, nevertheless, by the nearby Himalayas that cause the winds to rise again, thus setting-up a parallel belt of thick precipitation.
