The central nervous system is the brain and spinal cord, the peripheral nervous system is the rest of the nervous system. The brain is shielded by a skull, cushioned by cranial fluid, and blocked from most microscopic invaders by a blood brain barrier. The spinal cord is supported by the spine and cushioned by spinal fluid.
