The two main divisions of the peninsular plateau are:

The central highlands, one of the regions of Vietnam and The Deccanplateau, a large plateau in western and southern India which rises to 100 metres in the north and to more than 1000 metres in the south forming a raised triangle.

The plateau consists of two broad divisions. These are:

1. Central Highlands

this is the path lying north of the Narmada river which covers most of the Malwa plateau. The vindhyan range is bounded by the central Highlands on the south and the eroded broken Aravallis on the Northwest.

2. Deccan plateau

This triangular land mass lies to the south of the Narmada river. The Deccan plateau is higher in the west and slopes gently eastwards.
