The two major projects undertaken by NHAI are as follows:

1. Golden Quadrilateral: The four major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata are connected by the Golden Quadrilateral. This 5,846 km project connects four major cities. The project's $300 billion total cost is primarily covered by government loans and special crude oil tax receipts. India declared the four-lane Golden Quadrilateral transport network complete in January 2012.

2. The north-south and east-west corridors: The National highways connect four extreme points of the country via north-south and east-west corridors. Through Coimbatore and Kochi, the North-South and East-West Corridor links Silchar in the east to Porbandar in the west and Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south. The network is 7,142 km in length overall.
