Somehow we didn’t treat our kids as children, we always treated them as less experienced adults. We involved them in our decision making, when it was something affecting the family well being, like buying a house, or doing changes around the house. My boys were always with me trying to help when doing repairs or improvements in our home (that is when they didn’t have some other play in mind). As a result, their thinking was always more mature than many other adults I know and this helped me a lot, they came up with ideas that I didn’t consider until pointed out by one or the other. My daughter also got some mature thinking, like “You complain that I don’t wash dishes, rather than say thank you for being home not out doing drugs with other teenagers”.
