The two rulers under whose leadership , Mysore became a powerful state were Haider Ali and his son, Tipu Sultan.
Hyder Ali ruled under the name of the Wodeyar Family who ruled Mysore since 1339. He came to power mostly because of his acute warfare skills. His leadership during the 1st Mysore War with the British, proved his ruling capability.
When Haider Ali died from cancer, his son, Tipu took control of Mysore. He like his father had the support of the French and the local townsfolk of Mysore. Tipu Sultan also had a great win in the 2nd Mysore War with the British.
