The various endocrine glands and the hormones secreted by them are listed below:

  • Anterior Pituitary gland produces Growth hormone, TSH, Pancreatic hormone, metabolic hormone, Interstitial Cell Stimulating Hormone, LTH, MSH.
  • Posterior Pituitary Gland produces Oxytocin and Vasopressin.
  • Thyroid Gland produces Thyroxine.
  • Pancreas produces insulin and glucagon.

Endocrine systems control the secretion of hormones in our body. Secretion of hormones control the behavior of our body, and the way by which our body will react to a situation. Behaviors like aggression, mating, etc are controlled by hormones.

Endocrine glands and the hormones

Explanation:

Pituitary: Growth hormone, gonodotrophic hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, adenocorticotrophic hormone

Thyroid: Thyroxine, calcitonin

Pancreas: Insulin, glucagon

Adrenal: Adrenocorticoids, adrenaline, noradrenaline

Ovary: Estrogen and progesterone

Testis: Testosterone

Hormones and behavior

  • The hormones which are chemical messengers secreted by the endocrine glands plays a major part in behavior  development
  • This interaction between behavior and hormone is bidirectional meaning both can influence each other.
  • Hormones can alter behavior by influencing the interacting components like the input or receptor (sensory) systems, integrating (nervous) system, and the output (effectors like muscles) system.
  • Hormonal influences in these components leads to behavioral responses in response to specific stimuli
  • Neural processing can be altered due to the presence of hormones resulting in change of behavior.
  • Hormones can bring about change in behavior like mood, motivation, aggression, anger, personality changes etc.
