The Indian cropping season is classified into two main seasons-(i) Kharif and (ii) Rabi based on the monsoon. The Kharif cropping season is from July –October during the south-west monsoon and the Rabi cropping season is from October-March (winter). The crops grown between March and June are summer crops.

- There are two main cropping patterns in our country kharif crops and Rabi crops.
KHARIF CROPS :
1.Sowing season of kharif crops start at the beginning of Southwest monsoon ,i.e June and July because more water is needed by these crops.
2. Kharif crops are harvested at the end of monsoon season during September and October.
E.g - kharif crops includes paddy (rice), maize, soyabean, groundnut, pulses and cotton.
RABI CROPS :
1.Sowing season of Rabi crops starts at the beginning of winter,i.e October to December.
2. Rabi crops are harvested in the months of March and April.
E.g - Rabi crops include wheat, gram, Pea mustard, linseed and barley.
